"body": "**C. J. Ouseph**, 61, proprietor of **Malabar Produce Co.**, Bazaar Road, Mattancherry, was found dead at 23:20 on Sunday 11 October at the bay-7 weighing desk of his own godown, beneath a burst 60-kilogram bag of pepper fallen from the loft hatch above. He was found by the night watchman on his round. The godown's hoist rope was down with the bag.\n\nOuseph walked his godown alone every night at half past nine and ended the walk at the weighing desk with the day's slips — a routine known to the whole trade. Sunday was auction-season skeleton staffing; an exclusivity contract with a Bombay house was to be signed the following morning, and the buyers' broker had sampled the export lots that evening by appointment.\n\nThe pathologist places death between **21:00 and 22:30**. The road-gate register records five persons connected with the firm on the premises that evening at various hours: the partner, the godown foreman, the junior partner, the sample-room keeper, and the visiting broker. Their accounts of the night do not agree.\n\nAt the foot of the bay-7 pillar, an hour's walk of stacked pepper from the road gate, stood a small brass oil lamp. It had burnt to the end of its wick. The oil in it was fresh that evening.",

The **office room** and **sample room** stand at the front, by the gate; past them the bays are stacked to head height and above, and the deep floor cannot be seen from the front rooms. **Bay 7**, near the rear, holds the **weighing desk**, directly beneath the **bag hatch** of the timber **loft** that runs above bays 5 to 8. The loft is reached only by a fixed **ladder on the jetty side**. Bay 7's racking carries a welded repair scar dated 2018.\n\nThe deceased was found at the weighing desk stool, beneath a burst 60-kilogram pepper bag. The desk light was on; the day's weigh slips were under his hand. The **hoist rope** was down with the bag: its end shows a **single clean draw-cut**. There is no fraying at the cut and no sign of parting under load.\n\nOn the loft, the boards above bays 5 and 6 carry undisturbed dust. Above **bay 7** the dust is dragged in a single track from the bay-6 stack edge to the open hatch. The **jetty-side ladder** rungs carry fresh **bare-foot prints** ascending and descending; the front (office-side) approach to the loft does not exist.\n\nAt the rear, the **water-gate** to the private jetty steps was found with its **inner bar lifted**. The gate keeps no register and has no watchman. The canal steps were wet to the fourth step on a falling tide.\n\nThe **sample room** was found disturbed: two grading tins unseated, a tally slip re-stacked out of order, the balance left unzeroed. At the foot of the **bay-7 pillar** stood a small brass oil lamp, burnt out, its brass warm-clean and recently filled; a ring of old oil-stains marks the same flagstone.",

Cause of death was **crushing cranio-cervical injury**: a single massive impact to the head and right shoulder from above, consistent with a mass of **approximately 60 kilograms falling about 5.5 metres** onto the seated deceased. Death was effectively instantaneous. There are no defensive injuries and no other marks of violence. Blood alcohol corresponds to a single evening drink, several hours old. Death is placed between **21:00 and 22:30** on 11 October.\n\nThe burst bag recovered from the deceased weighed 58.4 kilograms with spillage reconstituted, consistent with the impact mass. The fall line from the bay-7 hatch to the weighing desk is vertical and unobstructed.\n\nThe **hoist rope** was received as Article 2. Its parted end shows a **single clean draw-cut through all strands at one pass**, with cut faces bright and uniform. A rope parting under load frays, necks and breaks strand by strand; none of these features is present. The cut end carries no load-glaze. The rope did not fail: it was severed.\n\nDust and fibre lifts from the loft boards above bay 7 match the drag track described in the scene report; lifts from the jetty-side ladder rungs returned plantar (bare-foot) contact, adult male range, ascending and descending.",
